The most significant direct role of estrogen action in vivo is its ability to elicit receptor-mediated cellular proliferation in mammalian target tissues such as the uterus, vagina, and mammary gland. However, estrogens also documented physiological effects in a number of other target tissues, including kidney. However the mechanisms by which exogenously added estrogen cause the neoplastic transformation of renal cortical cells or alleviate postmenoposal osteoporosis is not understood, and the little is known regarding the role of estrogens in regulating the function of normal renal cortical cells. Also glucocorticoid excess causes a complex of hormonal effects called Cushing's disease. Alterations in the functional properties of renal proximal tubule epithelial cells have been attributed to superphysiological concentration of glucocorticoid. A primary cultured rabbit renal proximal tubule cells (PTC) in serum-free hormonally medium would be powerful tool for studying renal effects of steroid hormone. Recently our laboratory is interested in a) interaction between estrogen and growth factors on the proliferation and membrane transport functions, b) effects of glucocorticoid on renal transport functions and its action mechanism in PTC.
