He obtained his Ph.D. from the Department of Biology at Seoul National University 1991 and then spent two years as research associate at the Institute of Basic Sciences of SNU before coming to CNU 1993. He was a visiting professor at St. Francis Xavier University of Canada from June 1996 to July 1997 and a independent investigator at the Friday Harbor Laboratories, University of Washington WA, USA from August 1997 to February 1998.

Research Interests

Community and Population Ecology

• Population dynamics and physical tolerance of intertidal macroalgal and seagrass beds in the south coast of Korea
• Structure, seasonal dynamics and reproductive phenology of phytobenthic community in relation to pollution and disturbance sporadically in subtidal zones of the south coast of Korea
• Interactions among the phytoplankton, microbenthic, macrobenthic algae and seagrass as primary producers in coastal ecosystem

Physiological Ecology

• Application of the functional/form hypothesis for morphological forms and photosynthetic performances
• Seasonal changes in primary producti on, photosynthetic quotients and pigment contents of inter- and subtidal seaweeds and seagrasses
• Photoinhibition of photosynthesis in the marine micro- and macroalgae by measuring chlorophyll fluorescence and oxygen evolution
• The effects of UV and polyphenol on subtidal algae and interactions with herbivores and epiphytes
